Anne Hamilton: Welcome to Hamilton Dramaturgy’s TheatreNow! This is a podcast series featuring some of the most exciting female artists working in the theatre today. I’m your host, Anne Hamilton. Today our guest is Murielle Borst Tarrant.

Murielle is a member of the Kuna and Rappahannock Nations. She is an author, playwright, director, producer, cultural artist, educator, and human rights activist. She comes from a long line of cultural activism with her family’s theater company, the world famous Spiderwoman Theater, located in New York City. For four years she served as the Special Assistant and liaison to Tonya Gonnella Frichner, the North American Regional representative to the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. Finally, she is the director of “Safe Harbors” Indigenous Arts/Theatre Collective at La Mama ETC.

Karel Čapek’s classic R.U.R. originated the word “robot,” and for nearly a hundred years, the play has been considered a classic, translated into every major language on the face of the planet. The plot is centered on a factory that makes artificial beings used in the service of humans. While at first these “robots” seem content with their function as domestic servants, a hostile rebellion soon arises that threatens the very existence of the human race. Lee Eric Shackleford’s adaptation brings the play’s characters, language, and themes into a modern vernacular while remaining as faithful as possible to Čapek’s intentions and vision.

WRITING THE ELECTION

Calling all Playwrights, Actors, and Directors

Writing the Election is a non-partisan theatre/voter registration event.  This purpose of this event, supported by Classical Theatre of Harlem and New Black Fest, is to come together as a theatre community to share our work in the service of boosting low voter registration.  The Daily News reported that, “New York ranks 47th in the nation, with less than 64% of eligible residents registered.”  The last day to register to vote In New York is Tuesday, October 9th.

Writing the Election 2012. Produced by Twinbiz and hosted by Dr. Barbara Ann Teer’s National Black Theatre on Monday, October 29th in Harlem  This non-partisan community event is free and open to the public.  On-going voter registration will be held in the lobby.  You can RSVP for this event on President Obama’s web site.

In this non-partisan theatre/voter registration event, writers of all stripes are invited to submit ten-minute plays, short scenes or monologues about the upcoming presidential election. Subject matter can include (but is not limited to) any aspect of the political process: the issues, civic life, government, ideals vs. reality, leadership, public service, voting, etc. Diversity of opinions on either side of the aisle and in-between are welcome! These non-partisan plays, moderated by a guest political pundit, are being read to celebrate the joy of democracy and to inspire citizens to get out and vote on Election Day.

Scripts must be submitted no later than September 21st at 11:59pm.  For more information and to submit your play* or your directing resume, please contact: Yvette Heyliger at  Writing the Election. Actors with cold-reading skills should email/bring pix and resume for on-site casting beginning at 6:00pm.  There is no submission fee for playwrights.  There is no compensation for the actors or directors.
* Plays should be no longer than ten pages, in 12 point Times New Roman font, and in standard playwriting format.  Monologues should be one page only and in 12 point Times New Roman font.



Kamilah Forbes, Assistant Director on Broadway

Congratulations to Kamilah Forbes, who served as the first guest of Season Two on TheatreNow! She is serving as Assistant Director of the Broadway production of THE MOUNTAINTOP by Katori Hall, starring Angela Bassett and Samuel L. Jackson. Brava!



The Anthropologists develop “ANOTHER PLACE” at HERE in NYC

One of the many programs which Kristin Marting runs is the Spring Artist Lodge at HERE, where she serves as the Artistic Director. Kristin gave a fascinating interview on Hamilton Dramaturgy’s TheatreNow! in Season One.

I am pleased to have been introduced to an emerging theatre company called The Anthropologists, which recently completed a full production at the Spring Artist Lodge. Their devised piece called ANOTHER PLACE was written and directed by Melissa F. Moschitto. Most amazingly, they spent only $15 on the costumes. Some of the pieces shown to me by costume designer Christina Kim? An apron made of wallpaper and a necklace made of plastic bags sourced from a takeout lunch. The entire design budget (lights, set, costumes) was $500, almost entirely using repurposed and recycled goods.

Here is a short statement by Melissa, who is also The Anthropologists’ Artistic Director, on the development of ANOTHER PLACE.

“The performance-in-process at HERE was an incredibly successful exploration of character, story and design elements. Over the course of the five weeks of development the script changed tremendously thanks to the inquisitive and generous nature of the acting ensemble. We worked to both condense the scope of the subject matter and characters (based on our Spring 2010 exploratory workshop), while enriching characters with a lot of detail. We also gave ourselves space to test out potential characters and storylines as well as ideas related to choreography and movement. We’ll now take a close look at what was successful and what might not make it to the next draft. Our next steps will include further development in Fall 2011 with workshops focused on script development and movement and dance. We’ll be looking to involve the audience in less formal but more intimate ways. We’re also building partnerships with scientific organizations to augment our research as well as environmental and community organizations with whom to develop free theatre-based workshops surrounding themes in the play. The ultimate goal will be a full production in early 2012.” – Melissa F. Moschitto
